They are rarely granted permits to go out; if they go to study they have to return home once the class is over; they do not go to parties; they do not make study groups in the houses of other friends; they do not have adventures; they do not buy things; they generally have little contact with the world. They live in limbo, they are neither here nor there. There is a rigid protection by the institutions that is understandable to a certain extent. In Colombia, Into The Light International supports aged-out orphans in their transition to independent living, addressing their unique challenges as they enter adulthood. Our comprehensive program offers a holistic approach, providing participants with housing, job placement vocational training, and essential life skills education. Through mentorship and guidance, we empower these young adults to navigate adulthood’s complexities, equipping them with tools to secure employment, manage finances, and integrate into society.
Many young people turning eighteen while still in the system face limited daily life experiences. They lack opportunities to explore, socialize, or understand street dynamics, raising concerns about their ability to survive once they leave institutions. Benedetti emphasizes that these individuals represent a youth interrupted by societal mistakes and undeserved consequences.
Our program aims to break this cycle by offering growth opportunities and self-determination to these young adults. By providing support and resources, we pave the way for a brighter future where they can fulfill their potential and contribute positively to society. With our guidance, they can emerge from the shadows of uncertainty into a new beginning filled with hope and purpose, ready to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
